00:00 / 19:33

“Once you arrive in Taiwan, only speak English. Taiwanese people won’t look down on you when you speak English.”

Vietnamese make up the second largest population in the Southeast Asian community in Taiwan. Whether they are students, migrant workers, or marriage partners to Taiwanese, there are many Taiwanese people’s assumptions about them. As a master’s student at National Chengchi University here in Taipei, Vân is assumed to be of any nationality but her actual one: Vietnamese. Join Van as she embarks on a journey to discover how Taiwanese people perceive her as a Vietnamese in Taiwan.

Written, narrated, and produced by Duong Nha Van.

Special thanks to Quach Ngoc Dinh for her participation in the interview.
